Artists Statement
I was born & spent most of my years at Kingston SE, which has ingrained a deep love & respect of the ocean & all its wonderful diversity.
I have always had a passion for art & this was encouraged & explored with the wonderful art teachers I had at Kingston on the Limestone Coast of South Australia. I had lessons in oil painting when I was 12 for a year and a half with a little old lady called Zola. I stopped dabbling with the brush at age 17, went on to become a manager in the food manufacturing industry & only picked up the brush again at age 35 after I left work to have a baby in Oct 2005. Yes that is a big gap! I have been busy with both ever since!
My main artistic focus is fish & the ocean, having been on fishing adventures since I was 3 & spear fishing since age 7, my ancestors were fishers & this heritage is actually Robe originated with some great characters in the local history books. I still do a lot of fishing in the boat, especially with Dad every year, & these fish I paint, I have caught, they all have a story which you will find a piece of on the back of my work!
The sea has treasures & obscurities that are a true delight, fish which have personality, senses of humour & ferocity, cuteness, beauty & …….almost ugliness! It’s ever changing, moody & occasionally lullingly gentle……………….its endlessly fascinating. It draws me back & is truly my happy place! Ironically I live in a town on the Murray River…………………but the sea calls me!
Each piece I do, is not just a picture, it’s a wonderfully happy piece of me. So should you be one of those whose choose one, remember to smile at it, as it has made me smile too!
