Robe Limestone Artist     JoJo Spook

JoJo Spook is a contemporary artist working in many mediums from painting, metal sculpture, ceramics and stone.

Here in Robe on the Limestone Coast there exists an enthusiasm  for working with limestone and we delight in seeing JoJo frequently with an eclectic collection of sculptures to be displayed at the gallery if only for a short time as they seem to find new homes very quickly.

JoJo 's sculptures  are suitable for your home or garden, the perfect work of art to take back from your holiday on the Limestone Coast.

Finalist in the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize

South Australian Museum 2008

I spent my childhood in rural England and it was there that I developed my initial appreciation of the natural world, from which I draw my inspiration as a metal work artisan.

I moved to Goolwa in 1982 where I still reside, setting up a studio/workshop in 1995 on a rural property.  It is the rural landscape with its fauna and flora that I find inspirational.  The subject matter is never ending with nature’s beauty and symmetry.

In 1998 I began working full-time as a metal work artist moving more towards copper, using recycled copper as my medium.  It is through the use of copper with its excellent malleability and workability that my work has progressed to more sophisticated forms, birds, lizards, etc, the use of water and light adding another dimension.

The application of heat using oxy/acetylene gas and silver solder I find is very versatile.  The heat making the copper soft and workable, the beating making the material harden in the finished work.

I find the creative process most rewarding – I am continuously learning and applying new techniques which seems to develop out of the completion of previous work.

Helena Tournier

Tucked away in beautiful Bellingen,NSW Nancy and I discovered the work of Helena Tournier. It appealed to us in many ways. Firstly Helena's free organic shapes that form vases, and animals are irresistible in themselves, but when you add stunning turquoise, matt black and   white crackle raku glazes they were far too wonderful to pass up. We immediately bought one for our own personal collection and later decided to invite Helena to exhibit with us this season. As I have been concentrating on patterns found in nature in my paintings it is interesting to note that Helena's decoration is also greatly influenced by the positive and negative patterning that exits  in natural objects and also is working with a similar palate of colour.

We are delighted to be presenting a collection of her work at our opening October 30th .
