Liz Gloyne
I was born in Mannum South Australia in 1954, attended school in Ballarat Victoria
and moved from Adelaide to the West Coast of Lower Eyre Peninsula in 1976.
I am currently based in Port Lincoln, the seafood capital of Australia.
I first began sculpting wood in 1980, inspired by the smells, wood grains and colours
of the Australian native timbers.
Many hours were spent patiently hand carving, fine sanding, oiling, waxing, polishing
and enhancing the natural beauty of a small mallee stump from the fire woodpile or a piece of river red gum that had been through the mill, waterlogged or badly burnt.
When I held the finished product in my hands, I could clearly see and feel the heart
and soul of the timber shining through with its smooth satin finish, its soft flow and
its warm glow.
Since 1982 much of my inspiration has been drawn from The Frenchman, an isolated
limestone ruins that overlooks The Coffin Bay Peninsula.
It is my out of town studio, where my imagination is stimulated by the beauty of the
land around me with all the rolling hills, natural scrub, rugged coastline, sandy beaches and the mesmerizing energy, tranquillity and spirit of the sea.
